Endocrine Surgery

The Rockwood Endocrine Surgery Center, along with Deaconess Hospital, offers advanced daVinci robotic thyroidectomy. Renu Sinha, M.D., FACS, performed the first robotic thyroidectomy in Eastern Washington in April 2011 at Deaconess. The da Vinci® Surgical System provides excellent visualization of critical structures for the surgeon. The primary benefit for patients undergoing robotic thyroidectomy is improved cosmetic outcome by avoiding a scar on the neck.

Parathyroid glands are located in the neck and maintain normal levels of calcium in the body. When the gland(s) become diseased, as in primary hyperparathyroidism, they shift calcium from the bones to the bloodstream which can cause damage to organs over time. Parathyroidectomy is recommended for treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism with cure rates of about 95% in the hands of experienced endocrine surgeons. Studies have shown a correlation of successful treatment of hyperparathyroidism when performed by high-volume endocrine surgeons. Rockwood surgeon, Renu Sinha, MD is experienced in bilateral neck exploration, radioguided/video-assisted techniques and "minimally invasive" or focused parathyroidectomy. Focused parathyroidectomy involves preoperative localization (imaging) to identify abnormal glands and intraoperative parathyroid hormone is monitored to assure that abnormal parathyroid tissue is removed.

Dr. Sinha received her robotic training through MD Anderson Cancer Center and with Woong Youn Chung, M.D., who pioneered the procedure. Dr. Sinha is one of a select group of high-volume thyroid surgeons in the U.S. trained to perform this procedure. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and has served on the Research and Education Committee of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons.
