Midwifery Center

Midwifery Services:

Many people associate midwives only with childbirth, but Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) actually provide healthcare for women from adolescence through menopause. Certified Nurse-Midwives are independent providers who care for clients in the office, can write prescriptions, admit, discharge, and care for obstetrical patients in the hospital.

Services at the Rockwood Midwifery Center include:

  • Well woman and gynecological exams throughout the life span
  • Preconception counseling
  • Contraceptive counseling and management
  • Family planning
  • Screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections
  • Free pregnancy testing
  • Prenatal, labor, delivery, and postpartum care
  • Birth services at Deaconess Birthwise in-hospital birth center or Deaconess Hospital

Midwifery Model of Care:

At the Rockwood Midwifery Center, Certified Nurse-Midwives help you maximize your options and give you and your partner the birth experience you desire. We provide options in childbirth that are holistic, safe, and personalized.  Mothers have the opportunity to be out of bed during labor, utilizing Jacuzzi tubs, birth balls and rocking chairs. We also support eating and drinking as labor allows. Every labor is treated individually and not put on a timetable.

We act as your guide through pregnancy and birth, providing evidence-based, family-centered care. A nurse-midwife will join you shortly after you arrive at the hospital and stay until after the birth of your baby. We are your partner through the birth process, reviewing your options to help you make decisions, and offering the encouragement and support you need to follow your birth plan.

Birth Options:

Birth options include an experience completely without intervention in the homelike setting of the Birthwise Birth Center or in the labor and delivery suite also at Deaconess Hospital, which offers additional options for interventions and pain management. The nurse-midwife group at Rockwood consistently has a cesarean section rate under 10%. However, if you should require a cesarean section, we will still be with you in the operating room, either by your side or assisting the obstetrician with your surgery. If the situation allows, you and your support person have the option of watching your baby be born through use of a clear drape, and immediate skin to skin contact.

Midwifery & OB/GYN Center Collaboration:

CNMs specialize in low/moderate-risk pregnancy. Pregnancy is considered a normal part of a woman's life cycle and is treated as such, unless proven otherwise. If a complication does develop during pregnancy or labor, one of Rockwood's all-female obstetricians is readily available for consultation or referral.

At Rockwood our highly qualified Certified Nurse-Midwives are here- for you.
